The Maine Event
Following our Coastal
Cleanup Field Trip to Lincolnville Beach, we continue our examination
of "Maine: the Way Life Should Be" back at LJHS for our first
whole-team event. The Maine Event is a celebration of all that is
Maine, and gives the team a chance to explore various aspects of this
great state beyond the walls of our classrooms. The exact
schedule of offerings varies from year to year, though we can always
count on a good time, a chance to try something new, and another
opportunity to expand our horizons. In the past students have
explored Maine Humor, Maine Pop Culture, analyzed Coastal Cleanup
results, tasted culinary delights from our own Gulf of Maine, learned a
bit about Maine's architecture and building techniques, prepared and
tasted gifts from Maine's orchards, explored Maine with all of our
senses, learned more about the art of quilting, participated in a Maine
Trivia game, explored crafts such as oragami, learned about winter
camping, enjoyed a "Focus on
Blueberries", learned how to publish a book in Maine, and all
about the sport of fly fishing. We've enjoyed a video tour
of Maine from the skies, and been entertained by a singing historian
named George Gaines Swanson. Through it all we've had the
opportunity to reflect upon what it means to be a Mainer, and why so
many people hold this state so close to their hearts.
