Heifer Project International (H.P.I.)

(A brief explanation)

Cold, fresh milk—good for you and delicious. Growing up, you probably took it for granted. But some children never get milk to drink. They don’t grow as they should, and they get sick often.

Back in 1944, Heifer Project set out to change that with the simple idea that if families had a cow, they could give their children all the protein-rich milk their bodies need. They could sell surplus milk or make cheese as a source of income. More than this, if each family passed on their gift animal’s first female offspring to another family in need, bit by bit, the whole community would benefit.

You may have heard of the old Chinese proverb: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach him to fish and you feed him for life". The mission of HPI reflects this philosophy. HPI has expanded since its simple beginnings, and now supports a variety of projects in countries all over the world. Flocks of chicks, helping families in Papua New Guinea improve nutrition and replenish the land, sheep for families in the United States to produce wool, trios of rabbits can provide food and income to families in China, beehives can help families in Mexico earn money through the sale of honey and beeswax, llamas improve livestock bloodlines and provide wool for Bolivian families…all of these are examples of just some of the good works being carried out by HPI and its supporters.

Over the past 56 years, the HPI project has been able to bring hope to millions of people through training and gifts of livestock. Those who have been helped continue to pass on the gift, by donating the first offspring to a deserving family, enabling HPI to touch lives far into the future. By working together, we create a better world. This also, is a lesson we hope to impart to our Gray Team students.
