BEFORE READING:

1) Set a Purpose - decide what you are going to learn from the reading.

2) Preview - look over the reading checking length, difficulty, content, and organization.

3) Make a Plan - decide how you will remember the information you seek. Possible plans are taking notes, graphic organizers, summarizing, using sticky notes, discussing, drawing sketches, or highlighting.

DURING READING:

1) Read for your Purpose - always keep in mind why you are reading. (what are you looking for?)

2) Make Connections - connect the reading to yourself, other books you've read, or the real world. The more connections you make while reading the easier it will be to remember later.

AFTER READING:

1) Pause & Reflect - stop and think "Did I find what I was looking for?"

2) Reread - do this if necessary to find the information you were looking for.

3) Remember - follow the plan you decided to do to help you remember. If you decided to take notes, then go back and take notes . . .
