SEARCHING FOR INFORMATION ON-LINE (Library notes 11/6/08)
What is a database?
~ It is any compilation of information!
ex. phone books, library card catalogs, newspapers,
magazines, etc. . . .
What is MARVEL?
~ It is a database of databases. It is on your laptop tool bar.
~ It allows you to search thousands of newpapers for FREE in ME.
~ MAS ultra allows you to search magazines.
~ To ease your search use “Teen Resources” or “KIDS!” links on left
side of page.
What is a Subject Directory?
~ Websites (usually personal) that have created lists of directories
categorized by topics or subjects
Ex.: BJ Pinchbeck’s Homework Helper www.bjpinchbeck.com
C.A.R.R.D.S.S. - Evaluating Resources (of any type)
Credibility - what is the author’s education or experience?
Accuracy - can the facts or information be verified through other sources?
Reliability - does it give the same information as other sources?
Relevance - does the information you found directly help to answer your
question?
Date - when was the information created or last updated?
Source - where does the author get their information?
Scope & Purpose - is the information too easy/difficult to read? Why was it
created?
